Out of the water for years?
PADI ReActivate rebuilds your knowledge and skills step by step, then proves them in the ocean. You leave with a new card that shows your ReActivated through date, so any dive shop can see your training is current.
It starts online with PADI ReActivate eLearning, about 2 to 3 hours at home. In person, you review with your instructor, relearn your skills in our pool where it is easy to focus, then finish with a short, shallow ocean dive for the skills that need water too deep to stand in.
Hilo is an advanced diving area, so after more than 5 years away we require it before you dive with us. It is an official PADI course, taught only by our PADI professionals. The in-person day runs close to a Discover Scuba Diving day. Certified with another agency? You can take it too.
Course Options & Pricing
The course requires PADI ReActivate eLearning, purchased directly from PADI. Start it as soon as you book. It takes most divers 2 to 3 hours, and it must be finished before your course day.
How to Get Your eLearning
- Open the PADI ReActivate eLearning page.
- Sign in to your PADI account, or create one. Use the same email you booked with us.
- When asked to choose a dive center, search Hilo Ocean Adventures and select us.
- Complete your purchase and finish it before your course day.

eLearning at home, then about half a day with us. You finish with a new card showing your ReActivated through date.

Skills You Will Show
- Gear setup and predive safety check
- Controlled descents and ascents
- Remove, replace, and clear your mask
- Get neutrally buoyant and hover
- At the surface in deep water, drop weights to float
- Ascend on an alternate air source, as donor and receiver
- Any skill you want more time on, plus anything your instructor sees you need
Emergency swimming ascents are practiced in the pool only.

Requirements & What to Bring
Requirements
- Open Water certified or higher, from PADI or any recognized agency.
- Ages 10 and up. Minors need a parent or guardian present.
- PADI ReActivate eLearning finished before your course day, with Hilo Ocean Adventures selected as your dive center.
- PADI Medical Questionnaire completed before arrival.
- Able to walk over uneven lava rock for the ocean entry.
What to Bring
- Certification card (physical or digital) and photo ID
- Swimsuit, worn under your clothes
- Towel and reusable water bottle
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Your own mask or computer, if you prefer them
Conditions & Post Dive Travel
Hilo’s ocean changes daily. Your instructor checks conditions the morning of your course. If the ocean is closed, we move your ocean dive, not your standards.
Following PADI guidelines, wait at least 12 hours after your ocean dive before flying or traveling above 1,800 ft. If you dive again the same trip, make it 18 hours. That includes Saddle Road, Mauna Kea, Volcano, and driving to Kona.
FAQs
How long can I be out of diving and still ReActivate?
There is no cutoff. If you are certified, ReActivate is built for you, whether it has been 5 years or 20.
Why isn’t eLearning included?
You buy it directly from PADI so you can start the day you book, at your own pace. It moves quickly through what you remember and slows down where you need it. PADI Club members get it free.
I am certified with another agency. Can I take it?
Yes. Any recognized entry level certification with four open water dives qualifies.
Why both a pool and an ocean dive?
The pool is the best place to relearn skills without swell or surge. A few skills have to be done in water too deep to stand, so we finish with a short, shallow ocean dive.
What does the new card show?
PADI divers get a replacement card with a ReActivated through date. Divers from other agencies get a PADI ReActivate Recognition Card. Either way, dive shops can see your skills are current.
Do I need ReActivate?
If your last dive was more than 5 years ago, yes. It is required before you dive with us or rent scuba gear. If it has been 2 to 5 years, the shorter Scuba Refresher covers you, but you are welcome to take ReActivate instead.
What happens if the ocean is too rough?
We move your ocean dive to another day of your stay. Your card is processed once the ocean dive is done.
I just need a quick tune up. Is this too much?
Maybe. If you dove in the last few years and do not need a new card, our Scuba Refresher is shorter and pool only.
