About the Course
Get back into the underwater world with the PADI ReActivate Scuba Refresher Program in Hilo. If it has been a while since your last dive, this is the official PADI way to refresh your skills, update your certification, and rebuild your confidence before heading back into open water.
The course runs about 3 hours total, split between our heated indoor pool and a guided shore dive at Wai’olena Beach. You will spend roughly 1.5 hours in the pool reviewing core skills with your divemaster or instructor, then move into the ocean for a 45 minute skill verification dive so we can confirm those skills translate to real conditions before you head out on bigger adventures.
Before your in-water sessions, you will complete a short PADI eLearning module on your own time to quickly refresh your dive knowledge. After completing the course, you will receive a brand new PADI ReActivate certification card showing your current status, recognized at dive operations worldwide.
HOA Two-Year Policy
Hilo Ocean Adventures requires a mandatory refresher for any certified diver who has not been diving within the past two years. This policy keeps our standards high and ensures a safe, positive experience for every diver in the water.
What You’ll Review
- Gear assembly, fit, and predive safety checks
- Proper weighting, neutral buoyancy, and hovering
- Mask removal and replacement
- Regulator recovery and alternate air source use
- Emergency weight drop and controlled ascents
- Underwater hand signals and diver communication
- Any additional skills you want to practice before returning to open water
How It Works
Step 1, PADI eLearning: Once you book, you will receive access to a short online knowledge review. Complete it at home, on a layover, or even the morning of your session.
Step 2, Pool Session (about 1.5 hours): Meet your divemaster or instructor at our Hilo shop and head into our heated indoor pool. You will assemble gear, run through predive checks, and practice the core skills above at your own pace.
Step 3, Shore Dive Skill Check (about 45 minutes): Move from the pool to the ocean for a guided shore dive at Wai’olena Beach. Your instructor will verify your skills in real conditions and help you adjust to diving in the open water again.
Step 4, New ReActivate Card: After your session, PADI issues you a new ReActivate certification card with a current date. You are officially back in the dive community.

Once you are ReActivated, Hilo has some of the best diving in Hawaii waiting for you. Sites range from sheltered shore entries to remote volcanic reefs reached only by boat.
