The lagoon is calmer than the open coast, but it is still the ocean. You walk in over lava rock and swim in open water. Our guides read conditions every morning and make the call before you get in the van.

About the Tour
Black sand, lava rock, and a lagoon where honu come to feed. We meet at the shop, fit your gear, and drive you a short way down the coast. You walk the black sand, get a safety briefing on the beach, and swim into the lagoon with your guide.
Your guide stays with the group the whole time, points out what lives on the reef, and tells the story of this stretch of coast. Float belts are included, so you can rest on the surface whenever you want.
This is a real ocean swim, not a pool. Entry is over natural lava rock, and conditions change by the day. You do not need snorkel experience. You do need to be comfortable in open water.

- Able to walk over uneven lava rock to the water.

Tour Details
- Meet: At our shop, 1717 Kamehameha Ave. We drive you to the beach and back.
- Duration: About 3 hours, shop to shop.
- Entry: From shore, over lava rock and black sand.
- Water: 75 to 80 °F (24 to 27 °C).
What You’ll See
Here is what guests commonly see at this site.
- Green sea turtles (honu) resting and feeding in the lagoon.
- Butterflyfish, wrasse, and tangs over shallow coral.
- Coral gardens growing between lava rock formations.
- A black sand beach shaped by lava, tide, and surf.
Give honu their space.
Stay at least 10 feet away and never touch them. Honu are protected, and your guide will show you how to watch without crowding them.

Do I need snorkel experience?
No. Your guide teaches you on the beach before you get in. You do need to be comfortable swimming in open water.
I wear glasses. Can I still see?
Yes. Prescription masks are available at no extra charge. Note it when you book so we can have one ready.
Can someone come who does not want to snorkel?
Yes. Book them as a Ride-Along for $59. They ride with the group, hang out on the beach, and get snacks. They do not go in the water.
Will we see turtles?
Honu are common here, but they are wild, so we cannot promise it. Your guide knows where they like to feed and rest.
What if I get tired in the water?
Your float belt keeps you up at the surface, and your guide is with the group the whole time. Signal and rest whenever you need.
What if the ocean is rough?
Our guides check conditions every morning. If it is not safe, we do not go, and we will work with you to reschedule.
