About the Dive
Spend the morning exploring Hilo’s Leleiwi Reef on a 2 tank shore dive adventure! This experience gives you more time underwater to fully enjoy the beauty and diversity of East Hawai‘i’s volcanic coastline. After meeting at our dive shop, our crew will transport you and your gear to the site, where a shore entry leads you into a protected bay surrounded by lava rock and coral gardens.
Between dives, you’ll enjoy a relaxed surface interval along the coastline while learning about Hilo’s unique marine ecosystems. Each tank explores a different section of the reef, giving you the chance to discover new marine life, different terrain, and the quiet rhythm of Hilo’s underwater world.
What You’ll Experience
- Two guided dives exploring the coral slopes and lava formations of Leleiwi Reef.
- Cool freshwater springs blending with the ocean to create a rich, brackish ecosystem that supports healthy coral growth.
- An abundant population of Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) often resting on the reef or swimming gracefully alongside divers.
- Depths ranging from 25 to 70 ft, with the second dive often exploring new routes or slightly deeper terrain for experienced divers.
- Healthy coral gardens, colorful reef fish, and the peaceful feeling of diving along Hawai‘i Island’s lush eastern shore.
Guided by Experts
Our divemasters know every corner of Leleiwi Reef and will guide you through the best sections for visibility, coral health, and marine life. They’ll point out camouflaged creatures, teach you about Hilo’s unique freshwater reef system, and ensure you get the most from each dive. With small groups and a relaxed pace, you’ll have plenty of time to practice buoyancy, take photos, or simply drift and explore.
At Hilo Ocean Adventures, we believe exploring Hawai‘i’s reefs comes with a responsibility to protect them. Our team practices and teaches eco-friendly dive habits, from proper fin awareness to reef-safe sunscreen use. Learn more about our ongoing conservation efforts and how you can help mālama kai — care for the ocean — during your dive.
