About the Dive
Discover the beauty of Hilo’s Wai’olena Reef on a guided 1-tank shore dive! Just a few miles from downtown Hilo, this site offers an incredible blend of marine diversity, volcanic topography, and true East Hawaiʻi adventure. After meeting at our dive shop, our team transports you and your gear to the site, where a shoreline entry leads into clear water framed by lava rock formations, coral growth, and dramatic reef structure.
Wai’olena (Leleiwi) is a rewarding guided shore dive for certified divers who are comfortable managing gear during a shoreline entry and exit. Conditions can vary with surge, swell, and footing on lava rock, but when the ocean cooperates the site offers beautiful reef scenery, healthy marine life, and extended opportunities to explore depths ranging from 25 to 70 feet.
Note: This is an active shore dive with natural ocean entry conditions. Divers should be comfortable carrying gear, walking on uneven terrain, and entering and exiting the water over lava rock.
Why Hilo is Unique
- Freshwater springs mix with warm ocean water, creating nutrient-rich habitats that attract a variety of marine life.
- Brackish waters and sheltered coves are home to an abundant sea turtle population and juvenile reef fish.
- The unique balance of volcanic rock and coral growth creates a colorful, textured underwater landscape found only on Hawai‘i’s east side.
What You’ll See
- Green sea turtles (honu) grazing among coral heads and resting on lava shelves.
- Octopus, eels, and other fascinating reef dwellers hiding in cracks and crevices.
- Schools of tropical reef fish such as butterflyfish, tangs, and Moorish idols.
- Healthy coral formations and volcanic terrain shaped by ancient lava flows.
