About the Experience
Curious about scuba but not ready for a full ocean dive yet? Our Try Scuba! experience is the perfect way to find out if the underwater world is for you. This is a pool based introduction that includes the classroom and confined water portions of our Discover Scuba Diving program, without the ocean dive.
Over the course of about two hours, you will start with a relaxed classroom session where your instructor explains basic scuba concepts, equipment, and safety. From there, you will move to our heated indoor pool, where you will learn how to breathe underwater, practice buoyancy, and become comfortable with the gear in a shallow, controlled environment.
This experience is designed for beginners who want to try scuba in a safe and supportive setting before committing to a full Discover Scuba Diving ocean dive. It is a great choice for families, couples, and groups who want to share something new together.
Note: This program includes classroom and pool only. No ocean dive is included with Try Scuba!
How It Works
- Check in at Hilo Ocean Adventures and meet your instructor.
- Begin with a brief classroom orientation that covers scuba gear, breathing techniques, equalization, and safety basics.
- Move to our heated indoor pool for a shallow water session in full scuba gear.
- Practice breathing underwater, clearing your regulator and mask, and controlling your buoyancy.
- Enjoy fun underwater skills and games while you get used to the feeling of weightlessness in a comfortable environment.

Upgrade to a Discover Scuba Diving Ocean Dive
Love your time in the pool and want to take the next step? Since this experience covers the same classroom and confined water portion as our Discover Scuba Diving program, you can upgrade to add an ocean shore dive on a different day.
You will only pay the difference in price, which is $175, and you will not need to repeat the classroom or pool training. Your instructor and our front desk team can help you schedule your Discover Scuba Diving ocean dive so you can take what you learned in the pool and experience the real reef.
Tip: Booking your upgrade soon after your Try Scuba! session helps keep your skills fresh for the ocean.
