About the Dive

Join us aboard the Hilo Horizons for a one-tank dive along Hawai‘i Island’s vibrant east coast. This shorter boat trip is a great way for certified divers to experience Hilo’s coral reefs, volcanic topography, and marine life without committing to a full-day charter.

After boarding Hilo’s only commercial dive boat, you’ll head beyond the breakwall to one of our favorite reef sites such as Horizons or Wai’olena Reef. These east side dive sites feature volcanic formations, coral ridges, and abundant marine life, with conditions that can vary depending on ocean movement and weather. After the dive, relax on board with snacks and beverages while taking in the coastline.

What You’ll See

  • Vibrant coral gardens and volcanic reef structures shaped by ancient lava flows
  • Schools of tropical reef fish, from yellow tangs to Moorish idols and butterflyfish
  • Encounters with Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) gliding across the reef
  • Coastal views of Hilo Bay and Mauna Kea rising in the background

Guided by Experts

Begin with a clear safety briefing and site overview, then enjoy a guided dive led by our experienced local divemasters. Your guide will help with buoyancy and navigation, point out camouflaged marine life such as octopus, eels, and cleaner stations, and adapt the pace to the site conditions and the group. Small groups keep the experience personal and safe, and our captain and crew choose the best site available for the day.

At Hilo Ocean Adventures, we believe exploring Hawai‘i’s reefs comes with a responsibility to protect them. Our team practices and teaches eco-friendly dive habits, from proper fin awareness to reef-safe sunscreen use. Learn more about our ongoing conservation efforts and how you can help mālama i ke kai (care for the ocean) during your dive.
