About the Dive

Discover Wai’olena Reef after dark on an unforgettable guided night shore dive. As the sun sets over Hilo Bay and daylight fades, the reef transforms into a completely different world. Lava formations take on dramatic shapes under your dive light, and marine life that stays hidden during the day begins to emerge.

This dive takes place at the same shoreline used for our popular 1-Tank Shore Dive at Wai’olena. While completing the daytime dive first is highly recommended to become familiar with the entry and terrain, it is not required for certified divers who feel comfortable with shore entries and night diving conditions.

Note: Night dives involve limited visibility outside your dive light and require strong awareness of buoyancy, navigation, and footing during entry and exit.

Why Night Diving at Wai’olena is Unique

  • The reef becomes dramatically more active after sunset as nocturnal species emerge.
  • Dive lights reveal vibrant colors and hidden creatures rarely seen during daylight hours.
  • Freshwater springs and volcanic terrain create a nutrient-rich environment supporting diverse marine life.

What You’ll See

  • Octopus actively hunting and changing colors under your dive light.
  • Sleeping parrotfish and reef fish tucked into lava cracks and coral heads.
  • Eels, crabs, shrimp, and other nocturnal invertebrates rarely seen during the day.
  • Bioluminescence when lights are briefly turned off, revealing the ocean’s natural glow.
