About the Tour
Choose a private 4, 6, or 8 hour charter departing at 6 am and head several miles offshore into Hilo’s deep bluewater. These trips take you beyond the calm bay and into the open ocean where large pelagic fish hunt along current lines and temperature breaks.
Our captains use traditional Hawaiian bluewater trolling methods and provide all rods, tackle, bait, beverages, and snacks. You may bring a sack lunch or upgrade to enjoy an optional barbecue on shore after your trip.
Disclaimer: Expect ocean spray and open ocean motion. You will likely get wet.
Where We Fish
We travel 2 to 5 miles offshore into deep Pacific waters. This is true bluewater fishing, far beyond the reef edge, where currents carry floating debris, plankton lines, and bait fish schools that attract large predators.
Your captain watches for bird piles, color changes in the water, bait activity, and surface disturbances to position the boat in the most productive zones.
What You Will Experience
- Hands-on coaching from our captain and crew as you learn the fundamentals of big game trolling
- Use of professional-grade trolling gear designed for powerful offshore species
- Wide open Pacific views, flying fish, seabird activity, and the possibility of dolphins or sea turtles
- The adrenaline rush of seeing a rod bend and hearing the drag scream on a big strike
- The ability to take home your catch or enjoy it on shore with our barbecue add-on
What You Might Catch
Offshore Hilo waters hold a variety of powerful pelagic fish. Depending on conditions, season, and luck, you may encounter:
- Mahimahi (dorado) known for their acrobatics and brilliant colors
- Ono (wahoo) incredibly fast and prized for their firm fillets
- Ahi (yellowfin tuna or bigeye tuna)
- Skipjack tuna and other tuna species
- Spearfish and occasional smaller billfish
Please note that large billfish may be released at the captain’s discretion to support sustainable fishing.
Gear We Use
For offshore fishing, we use heavy-duty bent-butt trolling rods paired with professional-grade two-speed big game reels. This setup is designed specifically for Hawaiian bluewater trolling and provides the power and drag needed to fight large pelagic species.
Our spread typically includes multiple trolling lines positioned wide for maximum coverage, giving you a realistic chance at landing the fish of a lifetime.
What Happens After You Catch a Fish
- You are welcome to take home any fish you catch
- Our staff can clean and fillet your fish for an additional fee
- You may also upgrade to enjoy your fresh catch at our optional on shore barbecue after your trip
